For many business students, building a career at a global technology leader is a key aspiration. This was also the dream of Cao Van Truong, a Vietnamese business student who sought to build a career at the intersection of strategy, technology, and impact. To challenge himself, he joined ASEAN Data Science Explorers (ASEAN DSE) 2024, where he and his team developed data-driven solutions aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

Not only did he become a finalist, but he and his team, aSAP, also became the regional champion for ASEAN DSE 2024. Following the championship, the impact of ASEAN DSE extended beyond the competition itself. Truong’s experience has opened doors to further global opportunities, including being selected as a Fellow in the Emeralds Program by Boston Consulting Group (BCG). 

Reflecting on this milestone, Truong credits ASEAN DSE for equipping him with the mindset and skills required to compete in highly selective international programs. ASEAN DSE has helped him in upgrading his skills, particularly in structured problem-solving, value-based thinking, and data-driven storytelling.

After the competition, Truong chose to begin his professional career with SAP Asia as a Digital Value Advisor. Grateful for the opportunities and foundation provided by ASEAN DSE and SAP, he was motivated to give back to an organisation that enables businesses and communities to create long-term value through technology. In his current role, Truong supports customers in understanding and realising business value from digital transformation initiatives, including aligning technology investments with strategic outcomes.

Looking back, Truong views ASEAN DSE as a pivotal stepping stone in his development, both professional and personal. “Beyond technical exposure, this competition has strengthened my confidence, collaboration skills, and ability to connect data with purpose”, Truong recalls.

As an ASEAN DSE alumnus and Regional Champion of ASEAN DSE 2024 who is currently working at SAP Asia, Truong’s journey demonstrates how experiential learning platforms can empower young talents to unlock global opportunities and build meaningful, impact-driven careers.
