Jessen Wiryawan
ASEAN Data Science Explorers 2023 Regional Finalist, Indonesia
Undergraduate Student at National University of Singapore, NUS Merit Scholar
Joining an international competition for the first time can be intimidating, but Jessen embraced the challenge head-on. As a Regional Finalist at the ASEAN Data Science Explorers (ASEAN DSE) 2023, representing Indonesia, he turned this daunting experience into a stepping stone for personal and professional growth. The competition not only tested his technical and analytical skills but also opened his eyes to the transformative power of data in addressing pressing global issues.
“The competition made me realise how data can tell powerful stories and solve real-world problems,” Jessen shared. Inspired by this realisation, he decided to pursue data analytics as a second major in university. The experience gave him clarity about his academic direction and reinforced his passion for using data to make a difference.
Beyond academics, ASEAN DSE served as a catalyst for his career development. The skills and confidence Jessen gained allowed him to excel in subsequent competitions, leading to remarkable achievements. In 2024 alone, he won three prestigious data competitions in Singapore. One of these victories even resulted in an internship offer, as recruiters recognised his ability to deliver impactful insights and solutions.
For Jessen, the most significant takeaway from ASEAN DSE was his growth in communication and teamwork. “I learned how to present complex data in a way that resonates with diverse audiences,” he explained. The feedback from judges and collaboration with peers taught him the importance of refining his ideas and adapting them to various contexts.
Looking back, Jessen sees ASEAN DSE as a key turning point in his life. “It wasn’t just about the competition—it was about gaining the confidence and skills to take on bigger challenges. ASEAN DSE showed me that with the right tools and attitude, anything is possible.”
