Joining the ASEAN Data Science Explorers was a life-changing decision. I know I’m not alone in saying that. The minute I spent looking at the social media publication was all it took for me to decide, despite the loads of work I had because of college. I didn’t consider the work that it would add to my schedule. All I knew was that I’ll learn a thing or two. After all, I always liked learning new things! I do it by researching and analyzing data! Of course, I was glad ASEAN had an opportunity for me with the ADSE. But what I didn’t know is that I’ll find something about myself by being more grounded on the world’s problems.
The UN-SDGs exist for a reason; because world problems exist. Looking at the six presented in the 2022 ADSE, I knew I wanted to focus on one of which I could contribute a suggestion: food sustainability. How I arrived at that topic has a cute backstory. If you should know, I take care of a lot of animals in our home. And I was always enamored by the concept of balance in ecosystems. More than that, I liked recycling so much that my goal with the animals I care for was a net-zero waste system. So I had a system of basic composting and vermiculture! From that, I expanded to what my team presented as Earthleigh. Aren’t we all here because we’re not satisfied with the current state of the world? We’re here to use science and math to make a better world for all of us. That’s the beauty of being a scientist, solving the world’s problems for everyone! The experience I gained here in ASEAN DSE made me closer to my dream of being a better scientist; to change the world for the better. Cheers!
